Your First Handmade Shirt: How to Sew a Shirt (Without Losing Your Mind)

Sick of shirts that don’t fit right, feel cheap, or cost too much? You’re not alone. Learning how to sew a shirt - one that actually suits your body and your style is the ultimate entry point into making your own wardrobe. And no, you don’t need a fashion degree (or a meltdown) to get there.

Let’s walk you through how to go from fabric rookie to shirt-making genius, without losing your cool.

Why Learn How to Sew a Shirt?

Of all the DIY clothing projects out there, a shirt is one of the most

practical. It’s something you wear almost every day, it requires a mix of technical and creative skills, and once you get the hang of it, it opens the door to sewing jackets, dresses, and even trousers.

Learning how to sew a shirt also teaches you about:

  • Fit and function – why ready-to-wear clothing often misses the mark

  • Pattern reading – a must-have skill if you want to graduate to other projects

  • Fabric behavior – from crisp cottons to drapey linens

From Pattern to Perfect: Our Favorite Shirt Sewing Workshop

Ready to dive in? OurClassic Shirt: Pattern and Sewing Instruction workshop is designed specifically for advanced beginners who want to level up.

In this hands-on series, you’ll:

  • Trace your size from a master pattern

  • Adjust shirt length to your preferences

  • Cut your fabric with the proper grainlines and interfacing

  • Assemble your shirt using French seams or an overlocker

  • Add buttonholes, topstitching, and polished finishing touches

It’s the perfect bridge between knowing the sewing basics and confidently constructing a full garment from start to finish.

The class runs across three sessions (or two longer ones) and includes everything except fabric, which you’ll bring based on your personal shirt style. Think of it as a shirt you’dactually want to wear, made byyou.

How to Prepare: What You’ll Need

For our Classic Shirt workshop (and most shirt sewing patterns), you’ll want:

  • Woven, non-stretch fabric – lightweight to medium, like cotton poplin or linen

  • 2 yards of fabric (63" wide recommended)

  • Sewing basics – scissors, pins, measuring tape (provided if you don’t have your own)

Not sure what fabric works best? Take your favorite shirt with you when shopping for fabric, and the floor assistant will offer their best suggestions based off of your inspiration.

What Makes Sewing a Shirt Challenging (and Totally Worth It)?

Shirts are sneaky. Theylook simple but pack in a lot of valuable lessons:

  • Precision cutting: one wrong snip, and your sleeve doesn’t align

  • Symmetry: collars, cuffs, and plackets need to match

  • Patience: there are multiple steps, and rushing ruins results

But don’t worry, we break it all down into bite-sized steps, so you build confidence with every stitch.
